Highwater, Higher Stake: Insurance Realities from Ashville Residents (Webinar) 05/15/2025

Thursday, May 15, 2025 (12:00 PM - 1:00 PM) (EDT)

Description

Join Richmond CPCU Society Chapter and IIAV for an insightful session exploring the critical issue of flooding in the United States. We will delve into the driving sources of flooding across the country, with a detailed case study of the recent Asheville flood, covering its origins, recurrence intervals, and real-world images that bring the event to life. We'll examine whether such events can happen again, highlighting the historic context, common features, and insights that help us understand future risks. The discussion will also shed light on the evolving insurance landscape, which remains largely unprepared, with only 1-3% of homeowners having flood coverage. Hear firsthand accounts from residents about power outages, water loss, slow recovery, and community resilience amid devastation. We'll analyze why these events occurred as they did, emphasizing the gaps in flood risk education and the reluctance to discuss personal experiences. The session will conclude with strategies for improvement—enhanced education, better communication, collaboration with agents, and advocating for flood coverage to be included or recognized as an accepted peril. We’ll explore the roles of both private insurance and the NFIP, considering potential future models and government initiatives. A Q&A discussion will help us better understand how we can prepare for and mitigate the impacts of flooding. Course #228836 | 1 Flood | Instructor: Derek Lynch
